Renaming Ethernet Interfaces in Ubuntu 10.04.1

If you replace your NIC and need it to become the "new eth0" edit the following file:

sudo vi /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

Change the name of the MAC address you want to become the new eth0.
